The undefeated KU football team faces its biggest test of the season: a showdown with the third-ranked Texas Longhorns in Austin. The big game comes on the heels of the Jayhawks entering the top 25 of both the AP and coaches polls. More on that below.
Don’t forget: The last time KU visited Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium, the Jayhawks stunned the Longhorns in overtime when Jalon Daniels connected with tight end Jared Casey on a two-point conversion for the win.
Can they do it again? Catch the game Saturday at 2:30 p.m. on ABC. And, of course, catch all our postgame coverage right here.
This is Wave the Wheat, and here are 5 Things You Missed This Week.
#5 - Hello, KU!
Labaraon Philon, one of the nation’s top prep basketball players, committed to the Jayhawks. He picked KU over schools like Alabama and Cincinnati. As one analyst says, “his calling card is his creativity.”
#4 - Hometown hero
Tanner Newkirk was a decorated cross-country runner in high school. But when he joined KU, he was shocked by the higher-quality competition. Now more settled as a sophomore, he won his first collegiate race. And as our Walt Wiltschek points out, Newkirk continues finding his stride.
#3 - Making waves
The KU women’s soccer team has asked a lot of freshman Olivia Page this season. None more so than when the Jayhawks trailed the Oklahoma Sooners 2-0 in a recent match. Then again, Page has never been one to shy away from a challenge.
#2 - Behind the scenes
The March Madness social media team spent a day with the KU women’s basketball team this week for its latest edition of College Road Trip. Our Matt Tait was along for the ride, which included a tricked-out golf cart, a mental health roundtable, and a modified game of H-O-R-S-E won with a near half-court shot.
#1 - ‘We want more’
The KU football team has no complaints seeing its name in the AP Top 25 and coaches polls. The Jayhawks are ranked No. 24 in both, heading into a Big 12 showdown with the third-ranked Texas Longhorns this Saturday. If anything, the recognition has the team fired up. “We want more,” defensive lineman Austin Booker tells R1S1. “We want to be higher on the list.” An upset in Texas would surely accomplish that.
