The Kansas men's basketball team opened Big 12 play with a loss for the first time in 33 years, falling 62-61 to West Virginia on Tuesday at Allen Fieldhouse.

The loss dropped KU to 9-3 overall and 0-1 in Big 12 play and put a damper on the Jayhawks' ability to ring in the new year with a smile.

Said a frustrated KU coach Bill Self when asked about the mood of the team after the loss: "I doubt there'll be people at 11:59 doing any countdowns tonight. We're down. ... We just need to continue to grind and stick together. We'll get better. The reality of it is, we're not the team we thought we'd be on Jan. 1."

Here's a look back at some of Tuesday's action against the Mountaineers.
