Former Jayhawk talks Lambeau Leap while taking in KU's season opener

Intimate setting of Children's Mercy Park adds potential new wrinkle to KU's gameday celebrations

Kansas City, Kan. — On the field before last night’s 48-3 Kansas win over Lindenwood at Children’s Mercy Park, I caught up with former KU safety Kenny Logan Jr. and talked to him about the environment and how much he would’ve enjoyed playing there.

Logan, who is still in the process of trying to catch on with an NFL team, immediately pointed to one reason why CMP would’ve been a terrific place.

“If it was me out there, I know the first place I’d be goin if I got a pick and got to the end zone,” Logan said.

And then he pointed to the KU student section behind the north end zone.

A Lambeau Leap of sorts was what Logan was talking about, saying in so many words that he would’ve hopped into the stands to celebrate with the fans if he had the opportunity.

But his reasoning was more than self-serving. Joking or not, he actually said he would’ve done it to take one for the team in a sense, so that the coaches could yell at him about not doing it again, therein showing his teammates that they shouldn’t think about it either.

Once a leader, always a leader, I suppose.

Real or imagined, true or false, Logan got a good laugh out of the whole idea of doing it. And then watched as cornerback Mello Dotson had his opportunity do so later in the game after a pick-six but did not take it.

Watch a replay of the video of Dotson’s interception that turned into a touchdown and you’ll see how close he was to the fans and how easy it would’ve been to pull it off.

It’s worth noting that Dotson scored his touchdown in the south end zone. The seats that Logan pointed to on the north side of the stadium have a much shorter wall to climb, which you can see in the background of this photo of Jereme Robinson rushing the passer. Pay attention to where the waists of the fans in the stands hit the wall.

The leap Logan was talking about certainly would have possible in the past at David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium or inside Arrowhead Stadium later this season.

But there’s something about Children’s Mercy Park and how close the stands feel to the playing surface — not to mention how low the seats sit to the ground — that makes it seem much more realistic at CMP.

Logan said KU cornerback Jacoby Davis would be his pick on this year’s roster for most likely Jayhawk to make that kind of leap after a pick-six should he get one.

No one did it Thursday night. And now it’s down to one more game to keep an eye out for it — Sept. 13 vs. UNLV — before moving the party to Arrowhead for the rest of the season.

Depending on what happens in NFL camps, Logan will likely be there. Will he get to see one of his former teammates climb into the stands?
